Calumny
- a false statement about a person that is made to damage their reputation
- false and malicious accusation; misrepresentation; slander
E.g. The unscrupulous politician was not above calumny; the lies he spread about his opponent proved decision in the closely contested senatorial race.

Obdurate
- hardened in feeling, resistant to persuasion, intractable, hardened to wrongdoing
- refusing to change your mind or your actions in any way
- SYN - stubborn
E.g. Some members of the committee are likely to prove obdurate on this matter.

Emulate
- to try to do sth as well as sb else because you admire them
E.g. She hopes to emulate her sister's sporting achievements.

Demagogue

- (disapproving) a political leader who tries to win support by using arguments based on emotion or prejudice 

E.g. Little more than a demagogue, the city's new mayor had come to power by promising a large redistribution of wealth to a number of minority groups.

Contumacious
- rebellious, disobedient, subordinate
E.g. Hoping that she would outgrow her contumacious behaviour, the girl's parents ignored her disobedience and rebelliousness.

Audacious
- willing to take risks or to do sth shocking
- fearless and daring; bold, insolent
E.g. An audacious decision.

Nadir
- the worst moment of a particular situation

Dulcet
- (humorous or ironic) sounding sweet and pleasant
E.g. I thought I recognized your dulcet tones (= the sound of your voice).

- relating to the sense of taste
E.g. The epicure's gustatory sense was so highly developed that he could easily identify all the differenct herbs and spices used in even the most elaborate meal.

Disparate
- fundamentally different; entirely unlike
E.g. In contrast to their nearly identical physical appearances, the twins had such disparate personalities that they had few interests in common.

Brigand
- a member of a group of criminals that robs people, esp. one that attacks travelers
- SYN = bandit, outlaw
E.g. The police apprehended the brigand after a lengthy chase.

Analogous
- similar in some way to another thing or situation and therefore able to be compared with it
E.g. His mother argued that not going to college was analogous to throwing his life away.

Nemesis
- punishment or defeat that is deserved and cannot be avoided
- a source of harm, ruin, retribution or vengeance; a formidable opponent that cannot be beaten
E.g. Yet again, she was facing her nemesis in the final match of the tournament; for three consecutive championships, she had faced this opponent, and for three consecutive championships, she had lost.
